Arai Hamao (新井破魔男)

Hamao ARAI (1843 - October 20, 1868), from Kai Province, was a member of the Shinsengumi. His surname was written as 荒井 (ARAI) as well as 新井.

After the outbreak of the Boshin War, he joined the Shisengumi.

He served as a close advisor of the leader Isami KONDO, and then he served as a close advisor of a commander, Jiro YAMAGUCHI (Hajime SAITO) in Aizu, but he was injured in the Battle of Shirakawaguchi. It is said that he was killed in the attack at Nyoraido by the New government army during the Aizu War, however these theories are not certain.
